Cui Zongjie Ph.D. Professor Cell biology (1) Cytosolic calcium oscillations: Oscillatory increases in cytoslic calcium concentration enable amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM), to encode multiple calcium signals and modulate specific cellular functions. Roles of NCX, ER calcium channels in calcium oscillations in secretory epithelial cells are investigated.
(2) Molecular basis of exocytosis: Secretory cells such as pancreatic acinar cells after stimulation have their secretory granules to dock at, and fuse with, the plasma membrane. We investigate SNARE and related proteins involved in this process of exocytosis.
(3) Singlet oxygen as a signaling molecule: Photon-absorbing molecules in nature can transfer absorbed photon energy to molecular oxygen, to produce the excited delta singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen due to its high chemical energy (94 kJ/mole), and short lifetime (1 μs) in cellular environment, has limited reactive sphere (< 10 nm). We investigate the delimited molecular targets of singlet oxygen in live cells, and resultant changes in cell signalling.
