Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology belongs to the College of Life Sciences at Beijing Normal University. It was developed on the foundation of the Biochemistry Staff Room of the Imperial University of Peking (1958). The Biochemistry major was founded in 1958 and undergraduate students were enrolled in the same year. After half a century’s development and accumulation, the department was approved to have master’s degree programs in 1981 and established a Post-doctoral station in Biology in 1995. It got funding support from “211 Project Key Disciplines Construction” in 1996 and was approved to have doctoral degree programs in 1998. In order to meet the needs of teaching and scientific research, the department was renamed as Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. With the development of science and technology in today's world, all the students and staff have worked hard and striven for the prosperity of the department. One Beijing Municipal Key Laboratory (Genetic Engineering Drugs and Biotechnology Laboratory) was established in 2001. In 2002, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was appointed as a Beijing Municipal Key Discipline. In 2003, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology developed into Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. In 2009, Key Laboratories in the department entered the National Self-innovative Demonstration Area and became a formal member of Zhongguancun Open Laboratory Alliance.

With the right to grant PhD and master’s degrees, the department possesses an influential teaching and scientific research focus. There are twelve staff, about three hundred undergraduate students, sixty-three graduate students and three postdoctoral students.
In teaching, the department is responsible for seven courses for undergraduate students (Biochemistry I, Biochemistry II, Basic Biochemistry, Principles of Genetic Engineering, Protein Engineering, Microbiology and Fermentation Engineering), five experimental courses (Molecular Biology Experiment, Biotechnology Experiment, Microbiology Experiment and Biotechnology Practice), and five courses for graduate students (Modern Microbiology and Technology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Integrated Experiment I and II, Pharmacological Methods and Natural Pharmaceutical Chemistry). Seventeen textbooks and academic monographs have been edited by professors and teachers in the department. There are other achievements including a second class prize of National education teaching achievement prize, the first prize of Beijing education teaching achievement prize, one national excellent course and two Beijing excellent textbooks. Professor Wei Qun is awarded “Master Teachers of Beijing Universities” and Li Sen won the first prize in Beijing basic teaching skills contest.

The department’s research focus has been on major needs of the sustainable development of the national economy. Its research mainly consists of three branches: Research on Structure and Function of Biological Macromolecule, Biology Pharmacology and Plant Molecular Biology. About fifty projects (done and undone) are funded by 863 programs, 973 programs, National Natural Science Foundation Project, Key Projects, National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, special fund and "Eleventh Five-Year" new drugs research projects. Six domestic and international patents have been authorized. One prize has been awarded under Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Ministry of Education and more than one hundred articles have been published in SCI.

Students and scholars interested in life science at home and abroad are sincerely welcomed to our department to seek a common development and build a great cause.
